URBANCROSS Gallery

URBANCROSS Gallery is honored to announce that Shen Linghao's new solo exhibition Hope will be launched on November 13, 2020. This is his second solo exhibition in Shanghai, in which his new artwork Island series will be exhibited.

Shen Linghao is an artist whose practice revolves around time, memory, and individual experience. He uses photosensitive materials in his work to visually represent constancy and change which convey the retrospection of time and the transience of memory. His work encourages viewers to walk through “time”, feel the lights project on their bodies, and leave the traces of life.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the global world concerning life, economy, culture, and mutual trust among humans. Every country, city, and individual seems to have become an isolated island. The psychical distancing and psychological alienation allows fear to spread. Healing the rift between people is more urgent than conquering the epidemic itself. In this exhibition, Shen Linghao will use light, images, sound and space to build an immersive experience of time. He tries to re-build the connection between one and other through shouting his voice, and gather hope again.

Island Series
Shouting to the Orange Sky
Site-specific installation (photosensitive media image installation, sound, video, luminous ore, railway simulation model, UV light)
Dimensions variable

Island Series: Shouting to the Orange Sky is a new site-specific installation created by the artist for his solo exhibition "Hope" at URBANCROSS Gallery. The whole work contains diverse creative media such as photography, video, sound, space, installation, etc., and attempts to create an immersive theater.
In this work, the 2002 released single "Shout to the Orange Sky" created by the band "Top Floor Circus" was played in a loop. The artist is deeply fascinated by the manifesto shouts and the strong poetic confrontation of the dilemma in this song. He tries to use this song as the emotional tone of the whole work, echoing the image of the sky of San Francisco, which was dyed red by the continuous burning mountain fire in September 2020, flashed randomly in space. The walls of the entire space are hung with 15 island shaped photosensitive image cut into island shapes and illuminated by a circular motion train device in the center of the space. The image presented by the installation is a record of the artist's trace of directing light to the void on the coastline of Anaya at night. It is made on an aluminum plate through photosensitive transfer technology. The surface of the photosensitive image is inlaid with naturally luminous minerals collected by the artist. The ultraviolet lamp installed on the back of the work will produce multi-form interactive changes according to the moving light source of the train and the frequency of the sound in the space. Accordingly, the surface of the photosensitive device and the luminous ore will record the track of flicker, change, movement, and other forms of light due to the "light-retention phenomenon" of the photosensitive material, and gradually fade over time. Through images, sounds, new materials, and the dynamic construction of space, the artist attempts to establish a connection with each viewer and to discuss life, time, hope, and the possibility of self-healing after the pandemic.

Island Series
We all need light, as we are each an island.
2020
Site-specific installation (photosensitive material, fabric, motional UV light)
Dimensions variable

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the global world on the aspect of life, economy, culture, and mutual trust among humans. Every country, city, and individual seems to have become an isolated island. In Island SeriesWe all need light, as we are each an island, the artist hopes to rebuild the connection between each individual. In this work, the entire space is covered by colored photosensitive fabrics corresponding to the 7-color spectrum. Based on the in-depth research on photosensitive materials and technologies, the artist creates a special shadow effect with these colors. The motional UV light source in the center of the work will rotate smoothly at a constant speed and variable speed, targeted multiple directions in the space to activate the colored photosensitive fabric in the work. The audience and their movements in front of the work will be briefly recorded on it, and then fade over time. The whole work is an open, immersive, and interactive space. The artist encourages viewers to walk through the concept of time, feel the lights project on their bodies, and leave the traces of life. The shadow of each viewer is like an individual's avatar stays in the space for a short time, connecting and interacting with each other. The artist tries to repair the rift between people's hearts by creating a metaphorical individual connection in the public space and gather hope again.
